Wolf Den 8, 9/2/09 Notes
Assistant Den Leader – Is anyone
interested in volunteering? The largest help from an assistant is having
another adult child safety trained to attend functions and for help in attending
committee meetings, if needed. I will miss several committee meetings due to
conflicts with Jake’s hockey practices.

Please do not
forget to bring your dues of $50, checks made out to Pack 61, to the
Pack meeting on September 18th. |
 |
The Cub Scout
year will follow the basic course that it followed last year. Popcorn
sales will be this month and next, with delivery in time for the
holidays. We will do a glove drive like we did last year, but it may be
coats or sheets or something else this year. We’ll do the scouting for
food drive in late fall, and the pack will be involved in the tree
lighting ceremony in early December. Pinewood Derby will be in early
January, and I highly recommend the Pinewood Derby Clinic to anyone who
wants to knock out building the car in about an hour and a half. Blue
and Gold is in February, and we’ll do at least one, maybe two, over
nights between January and May 2010, much like Battleship Cove last
year. We’ll do a bowling trip and the bake sale in the spring, and
we’ll earn our Wolf Badges in the late spring and wrap up with the camp
out at Kettletown State Park in June. |
 |
Don’t be shy to
volunteer to help run activities. The Pack needs volunteers for
Scouting for Food, a Popcorn “Kernel,” Pinewood Derby (Carman, they want
to know if you want to head this up again like last year), the Glove(or
other needed item) Drive, Pack Overnights(like battleship cove), and
plenty other things. |
Popcorn details
 |
Popcorn will run
much like it did last year. I have the sheets, I’ll get them to you at
the Pack meeting unless you want them earlier. The goal is for every
boy to sell at least $150. |
 |
There will be a
sign up sheet for hour long shifts for the Show and Sell at the Pack
meeting. The dates are September 26 and 27 in front of Kmart and Shaws.
|
 |
All order forms
are due to me at the October 16th Pack meeting. |
 |
I suggest you
get money for the orders at the time people make the orders, it will
make your life easier, but it is not required. You can log onto the
website trails-end.com to get your online ID for people to buy from you
over the internet. |
Advancement plan
 |
Like last year,
we’ll work our Den meetings around the requirements for the Wolf badge
with the goal of earning it by May 2010. If you are interested in doing
electives, which are laid out in the Wolf Book, feel free to do those as
a family and let me know what you’ve accomplished so you can be
recognized at the Pack Meeting. The electives are not required for the
Wolf Badge, but they are fun for a boy who wants to do more with the
scouting program. |
Advancement details
 |
Parents can sign
off on advancement. If you miss a Den meeting where we do a
requirement, you can do it as a family and just let me know when you’re
done. |

Current:
Attached is a
calendar, in the same format as last year, outlining our Den and Pack
activities this year and notes from last night's committee meeting. I know
this is a lot of information, but take 10 minutes to read through it and it
you won't find any surprises.
There are still
open den meeting dates and open requirements to pick from before this
Friday's deadline. Here's a list of what remains and some easy ideas for
Den meetings to plan around them:
#2 Your Flag -
have the boys create a flag from their favorite state to bring to the
meeting and present, coordinate with parks and rec for a room there to meet
and to use their American flag and flag pole for the pledge and flag folding
and raising activities.
#3 Keep Your Body
Healthy - Like above, the boys can do their healthy chart in advance and
then present them at the den, and you can coordinate a basic first aid class
with Southbury Ambulance right off exit 14.
#5 Tools - We can
meet in your garage, learn about tools, and build book ends from scrap
wood. Maybe coordinate with Home Depot or Lowes and see if they do anything
for Scouts for a den event
#7 Living in Your
World - coordinate a trip to the dump, find somewhere that needs a clean up
and we can do it as a den
#8 Cooking and
Eating - coordinate with Dipalma or some other restaurant and we can go
there and cook/tour kitchen, eat and clean up. The boys can do the menu for
their families and then present them at the den meeting.
#9 Be Safe - We
can all check someone's home for safety issues, then learn about street
rules and safety, then bike around their neighborhood. The boys can lead
checking their own home's when they get home after the meeting
#10 Family Fun -
don't pick this one, I think the families themselves have this one covered
#11 Duty to god -
we can meet at your church/place of worship and do a needed service project
for them and speak with their leader about religion
#12 Making
Choices - Each boy can act out one of the requirements and talk about their
choices
This list is just
suggestions. These are easy to plan with just modest preparation; pick what
you're interested in and a date that works for you so you're not stuck with
whatever is left over.
